Short-Form Vertical Video Is Here
GeoTasker now renders vertical 9:16 videos — perfect for YouTube Shorts, TikTok, and Instagram Reels. Just ask for a "Short" and the AI handles the rest.
Why Short-Form?
Short-form video is the fastest-growing content format on the planet. Over 2 billion people watch YouTube Shorts monthly. TikTok and Reels aren't far behind. But creating geo-content for these platforms has always been painful — most map tools only output 16:9 landscape.
Now you can go from a text prompt to a publish-ready vertical map video in under a minute.
How It Works
The workflow is identical to standard GeoTasker videos. Just mention the format in your prompt:
"Create a YouTube Short about the Strait of Hormuz and why it matters for global oil"
"Make a TikTok-style video about the top 5 largest countries by area"
"30-second Reel about the Silk Road trade routes"
GeoTasker automatically:
- Sets 1080x1920 resolution (9:16 vertical)
- Keeps the story to 2-5 punchy segments (15-60 seconds)
- Uses tighter camera zooms optimized for phone screens
- Adapts chart layouts to stack vertically
- Picks faster transitions and higher-energy music
- Scales text overlays with larger fonts for mobile readability
Quick Start
Just add "Short", "TikTok", "Reel", or "vertical video" anywhere in your prompt. GeoTasker handles the rest.
What's Different From Standard Videos?
| Standard (16:9) | Short-Form (9:16) | |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 1920x1080 | 1080x1920 |
| Duration | 45-120 seconds | 15-60 seconds |
| Segments | 5-12 | 2-5 |
| Pacing | Gradual cinematic build | Hook in first 2 seconds |
| Music | Cinematic, orchestral | Upbeat, electronic |
| Transitions | 0.5s smooth wipes | 0.3s fast cuts |
The key difference is pacing. Short-form content needs to hook the viewer immediately. GeoTasker's AI knows this — it front-loads the most dramatic visual and keeps every segment tight.
The Title Overlay Redesign
We also redesigned how titles render on map segments. The old centered title card with a blurred background box has been replaced with a clean, shadow-only title that floats at the top of the frame.
Why? The map is your visual hook. A dark box covering half the screen defeats the purpose of having a moving map behind it. The new design:
- No background box — just bold text with heavy shadow
- Top-positioned — sits at the top 10%, leaving the map fully visible
- Basemap-aware — automatically uses dark text on light maps, white text on dark maps
- Smart subtitle stacking — subtitle auto-positions below the title regardless of whether the title wraps to 1 or 2 lines
This applies to both standard and short-form videos.
Resolution Options
You can also set the resolution explicitly via the API:
| Resolution | Dimensions | Use Case |
|---|---|---|
1080p | 1920x1080 | Standard landscape (default) |
720p | 1280x720 | Lower quality landscape |
shorts | 1080x1920 | YouTube Shorts, TikTok, Reels |
shorts_720 | 720x1280 | Fast preview (lower quality) |
4k | 3840x2160 | Ultra HD landscape |

Set "resolution": "shorts" in your story JSON to render vertical video programmatically.
Content Ideas for Short-Form
Not sure what to create? Here are some formats that perform well as Shorts:
- "Did you know?" — A single surprising geographic fact with a map zoom
- Country comparisons — Side-by-side stats with racing bar charts
- Route animations — Trade routes, migration paths, road trips
- Before/after — How borders, cities, or landscapes changed over time
- Top 5 lists — Largest, smallest, most populated, most remote
